Moms can come in all different forms. The mother figure in your life may be the woman that gave birth to you, a step-mom, a foster mom, or an adopted mom. She could even be another family member or adult woman in your life that has taken care of you.
Whoever the mother figure in your life may be, there’s no denying that mothers are important.
Mothers are known for their nurturing, unconditional love. They are often our best teacher, our confidant, and friend. They are someone we can go to for advice. They are also someone who can also put us in our place when needed.
Moms are often the glue that holds families together. They know how to make things better, whether it’s kissing a toddler’s scraped knee or comforting a teenager after their first broken heart. A hug from mom can help soothe us at any age.
Moms are often our biggest cheerleaders and best supporters. From taking our first steps to getting a big promotion and everything in between, mom is there cheering us on. Moms are simply amazing, and we should let them know that.
As Mother’s Day draws near, we often find ourselves thinking more about our moms than usual. Giving your mom a special gift on Mother’s Day is a fantastic idea. But, don’t stop there. Mother’s Day isn’t the only day we should show our love and appreciation to our moms.
Keep reading if you’d like some ideas on how to show your love and appreciation to your mom. These ideas are great not only for Mother’s Day but any day of the year.
Say It
We may think that our moms know that we love them and are grateful for all they do for us. But actually, hearing the words will mean so much to your mom. It doesn’t have to be overly fancy. A simple, authentic “I love you, Mom” or “Thank you for everything, Mom” is a great place to start.
You could call your mom in the middle of the day just to talk. Moms love to know how their kids are doing and what’s going on in their lives. You could tell her how much you appreciate her advice and support.
Write It
Some of us aren’t so good at saying things aloud and would prefer to write our feelings instead. If this is you, that’s ok. Mom will love getting something handwritten from you. Here are a few writing ideas that will mean a lot to your mom.
- Write an original poem.
- Write a letter- bonus points if you send it in the mail. Not many people send letters in the mail anymore. Think of how pleasantly surprised your mom will be to find an unexpected letter in the mailbox from you.
- Write a list of things you appreciate about your mom.
- Make a memory jar with notes telling some of your favorite memories of your mom.
- Help your mom write her life story.
Service
Moms are the epitome of giving service to their families. They do things that we may have often taken for granted. Things like cooking meals, doing laundry, being the family taxi, caring for their sick kids, staying up late to help finish a school project, etc.
Why not give mom a break and do some service for her? Some things you could do are:
- Yardwork
- Clean the house. Or, if you don’t have time to clean the whole house, maybe pick one of your mom’s least favorite chores and do it for her.
- Wash and detail her car.
- Fix things around the house.
Food
Melt your mom’s heart by preparing some of her favorite foods. She’ll love it even more if she doesn’t have to be the one to cook the food.
- Breakfast in bed- let mom sleep in and wake up to a yummy breakfast. She won’t even have to leave the comfort of her nice, warm bed to enjoy it.
- Make her favorite dinner.
- Cookies- you can bake mom her favorite kind of cookies or even order her some decorated cookies for Mother’s Day and have them delivered to her house.
- Buy her chocolate.
- Take her out to her favorite restaurant.
Personalized Gifts
Moms are sentimental creatures. They love things that remind them of their precious children. Your mom will love getting a personalized gift from you. Here are some suggestions that might even bring on happy tears.
- Locket with a special picture inside.
- Personalized necklace, such as one with birthstones or names of her kids.
- Mother’s ring.
- Scrapbook or photo book with some favorite family photos.
- Customized photo gifts such as a mouse pad, family calendar, a mug, or collage.
Handmade Gifts
Most moms love it when their young kids make them handmade gifts. That doesn’t change as you get older. Moms still love the thought and effort that goes into creating something homemade. No matter your artistic ability or talents, there is something you can make for your mom.
- DIY bath salts or body scrub.
- Bird Feeder.
- Recipe book- you can compile all of those old recipe cards your mom has in her cupboard and make them into a recipe book for her.
- Handmade card.
- Painting.
Time
One thing that we can never get back is time. Time with those we love is never time wasted. Giving the gift of quality time is something any mom will cherish. You can do something she loves to do or even take on a new adventure together.
- Go on a hike.
- Go skydiving or bungee jumping.
- Go shopping together.
- Have a spa day- get a massage, pedicures, or manicures together.
- TV show or movie marathon- let your mom pick what you watch.
- Plan a family game night- invite other family members that your mom would enjoy spending time with.
If you live far away from your mom, don’t worry. While many of these things are better done in person, there are still plenty of ways you can show your mom love from afar. If feasible, you could plan a trip to see your mom. Or, you could send gifts by mail. Just do what works best for your situation.
We can never fully thank our moms for all they do for us throughout our lives. But, there are many different ways we can at least try to show our moms what they mean to us. No matter what you decide to do for your mom, if it’s from your heart, you’ll make her Mother’s Day a special one this year.
