Since Valentine’s Day is traditionally a day for couples to celebrate their love, you may dread this holiday if you are not in a relationship. Being single on Valentine’s Day can be rough. But it doesn’t have to be.
It is actually a common misconception that Valentine’s Day is “a day for lovers.” In truth, Valentine’s Day is a day dedicated to love—romantic or otherwise. So, don’t let the fact that you are single ruin this day for you.
Instead of dreading the holiday, choose to do something fun. You can spend it with those you love, such as friends and family, or better yet, show yourself some love. Below are some great ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day as a single member of society.
1. Galentine’s Day
“Galentine’s Day” is becoming more and more popular. If you haven’t heard of it, here’s a quick rundown. Galentine’s Day started on the sitcom “Parks And Recreation.” The character, Leslie, created this holiday to hang out with her gal pals.
On the show, they celebrated Galentine’s on February 13th, and the ladies weren’t necessarily single. However, in real life, many single ladies choose to celebrate with their other single friends on February 14th, so they aren’t alone on Valentine’s.
Don’t worry, men, you can do this too! While most guys don’t care about labeling their get-togethers, here are a few suggestions just in case: “Malentine’s,” “Guylentine’s,” or “Brolentine’s.” The label doesn’t matter; just get with some of your bros and hang out.
Another option is to gather all your single friends of both genders. A “Palentine’s Day,” if you will. Whatever you call it, here are a few suggestions for celebrating this day with your friends.
Movie Marathon– On Valentine’s Day, a cheesy love story may feel like the best option for a movie. But if a show like that will make you feel bad about your love life, we suggest choosing something different.
A horror film or action movie may be a good idea, as they will likely keep you intrigued and on the edge of your seat. However, comedy might be the best way to go. A good laugh is good for the soul and is a great way to connect with your friends.
Games– Playing games with friends is always a good idea. The competition laughs, and ensuing conversations make for a perfect evening.
Dinner– While heading out to a restaurant might be a little crazy on Valentine’s Day, if you plan well in advance, you can reserve a table for yourself and your pals. Or, better yet, order take-out and eat it at one of your houses while watching a movie or playing games.
Enjoy Plenty Of Desserts– There is no better way to spend Valentine’s with your friends than stuffing yourself full of delicious desserts! Chocolate cake, glazed donuts, gourmet chocolate chip cookies, etc., are sure to make your celebration the sweetest one yet.
2. Be Your Own Valentine
Valentine’s Day is about love. One important love in this life is self-love. Self-love not only boosts our self-esteem but also empowers us, lowers stress, and enhances our positivity.
Be your own Valentine and treat yourself to one or more of these great ideas.
-
- Splurge On A Big Gift– Is there some expensive item you have been eyeing for a while? If so, Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to spoil yourself. You deserve it.
- Eat Your Favorite Foods– For many of us, food is a comfort, a sort of love language, so to speak. So, on this day of love, enjoy some of your favorite foods. Whether you order take-out or cook it yourself, your tastebuds will thank you.
- Order Gourmet Cookies Online– Valentine’s Day is a day for sweets, but no one says that the sweets need to be gifted to you by someone else. Do yourself a favor, order Valentine’s cookie box, and have it delivered right to your door. All the love, none of the baking.
- Spa Day– Relax, unwind, and de-stress by enjoying a day at the spa. Or, have a spa day at home with a nice bubble bath, face mask, or whatever relaxes you.
- Flowers– Who says that a bouquet on Valentine’s Day is only reserved for men to give to women? No one, that’s who. So, if you would like a bouquet of flowers, order yourself the most beautiful bouquet and enjoy it for days to come.
3. Spread Love Like Confetti
Since Valentine’s Day is dedicated to love, why not spread that love to those around you? Especially those who may need a little extra love. Here are some suggestions on how to brighten not only someone else’s day but yours as well. Serving others will make you feel good inside.
Volunteer– A great way to spread love to those less fortunate than you while also taking your mind off your relationship status is to volunteer. Some good places to volunteer include:
-
-
- Hospital or Nursing Home– Being in a medical facility or care home can be isolating. Bring your love and helping hands to a hospital or nursing home near you for Valentine’s Day. You could also make Valentine’s cards for patients or residents. This will brighten their day, and you will feel pretty good yourself.
- Pet Shelter– Valentine’s Day is a great time to spread some love to homeless pets while also filling your heart. It doesn’t get much better than cuddling sweet cats and dogs. Who knows, maybe you’ll even meet a pet you can’t live without.
- Food Pantry– Help collect or distribute food to those less fortunate than yourself by volunteering at your local food pantry.
-
Be Someone’s Secret Admirer– Do you know someone who is also feeling lonely this Valentine’s Day and could use a pick-me-up? Why not be their secret admirer?
This doesn’t mean you have to be romantically interested in them. You could choose a single co-worker, your recently divorced brother, or an elderly neighbor who lost her husband years ago.
No matter who it is, you will have fun secretly doing things for them, and their Valentine’s Day will exceed their expectations.
Show Your Family Some Love– There is no love quite like the love of a family. Show your family members some extra love this Valentine’s Day by spending time together, sending them cards, delivering freshly baked cookies, or ordering a Valentine cookie delivery right to their door.
As you can see, Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a dreaded holiday. Single or not, take some time to enjoy this day of love.
