Summer is a distant memory, and fall is in full swing; soon, winter will be upon us. There are many things to enjoy during the winter, such as the holidays, sledding, getting cozy by a warm fire, etc. It’s no wonder it is often referred to as the “season to be jolly.”

But, unfortunately, it is also the season to be sneezing. Cold and flu viruses, along with Covid-19, R.S.V., and various other viruses, like to take up residence during this time of year. There is nothing jolly about that.

If a friend or loved one falls victim to one of these unwanted guests, you may wonder how you can help lift their spirits and help them feel better. Keep reading for some great ways that you can help bring a little bit of jolliness back into the season.

Take Note

It is essential to remember that to slow the spread of illness, we should try not to get too close to those who are contagious. If you can help it, the best way to keep things jolly is to keep yourself healthy.

Sometimes that can’t be helped, for example, if you live with the person who is ill or if it is someone you care for. If you must have contact with someone who is contagious, be sure to wash your hands regularly, don’t share drinks or utensils, and limit physical contact.

Almost all of the gifts we will suggest are things that can be sent in the mail, delivered, or dropped on their doorstep.

1. Comfort Them With Comfort Food

It is common to crave comfort food when you are under the weather. What that is for each individual may vary. Hopefully, you know your friend or loved one well enough that you know what they would like. But, here are a few ideas that are sure to comfort anyone not feeling well.

  • Cookies: Cookies are the ultimate comfort food. You can bake cookies and drop them off on your loved one’s doorstep, or better yet, order a cookie care package online and have it delivered.
  • Ice Cream: If dealing with a sore throat, your friend will appreciate the blessedly cold sensation of ice cream. This one may be a little harder to have delivered, but you could leave it on their porch. Just make sure to alert them to retrieve it before it gets soupy.
  • Soup: Speaking of soup, this is one of the most iconic foods associated with sickness. Soup can warm the soul and soothe the body. Make homemade chicken noodle soup and deliver it to your loved one’s doorstep. Just be sure they get it quickly while it’s still hot.
  • Saltine Crackers And Soda: Many people swear by soda (such as Coke or Sprite) and saltine crackers to help settle the stomach after the effects of a stomach bug.
  • Home Cooked Meal: If someone is in the middle of being sick or is recovering, they often don’t have the energy to cook for themselves. Making and delivering a home-cooked meal like a casserole is a great way to show care.

2. Send A Card, Old School Style

One of the age-old ways to say “get well soon” is to send a card in the mail. Receiving a card in the mail, letting them know you are thinking about them, is sure to make your friend or loved one smile, despite not feeling well.

3. Send A Bouquet Of Well Wishes

Sending your loved one a bouquet of fresh flowers will brighten their room and their day. Flowers make a “scent-sational” gift; that is if the recipient can even smell them. A stuffy nose can make this a little tricky. But, your loved one will still enjoy the beauty of the flowers.

4. Help Them Rest And Relax

Most doctors would probably agree that rest and relaxation are critical to recovering from an illness. Help your friend follow this advice by giving them one of the following gifts:

  • Bath Bomb: A nice, long soak in a hot bath can help relieve aching muscles and is very relaxing. A bath bomb can have beneficial properties such as essential oils to further soothe body aches.
  • Warm Blanket: A soft, plush blanket is the perfect thing to cuddle up with when you are under the weather. Your friend can rest better with a new blanket from someone who cares.
  • Run Their Errands: If someone is sick, they should try to stay home as much as possible. To help with this, offer to run errands for your loved one. This might include getting groceries or picking up their medication.

Also, when someone doesn’t feel well, there is no way they will be able to keep up with housework and laundry. Keeping a safe distance, you can offer to help do their housework for them.

5. Supply Boredom Busters

Being stuck at home can get a little boring after a couple of days. To help ease your friend’s boredom and get their mind off their illness for a bit, send them some activities, such as:

  • Puzzles
  • Coloring Books
  • Movies
  • Books

Being sick is nobody’s idea of a happy holiday season. If someone you care about becomes ill, you’ll know how to bring some “jolly” back to their life.

If you want to treat someone special, consider buying them flowers, balloons, or chocolate. You could also take them to a spa to get their nails done or for a relaxing massage.
